Harney is not an anthropologist, nor does he think that tribal tales should be approached in that manner. They become stilted, unreal, saying only what the aborigines think they should say and only what they are allowed to say by tribal law. So he approachs the aborigines and their stories as a listener. He spent a great deal of time getting to know them, working in areas where he could employ them and quietly camping in the bush near them to see if they would approach him. He learned that asking questions was for children. Grownups wait for the storyteller to continue his story, even if that means waiting a day or two. He also discovered that many stories involve making fun of someone who has done something silly. And that aborigines love to laugh. He gets good stories. Not as straight forward as an anthropologist would, but in the complicated, sometimes unfinished form they actual are. No one ends a story by saying "and that's how the crocodile got his tail," or something along those lines.Although Harney is the main "character" in the book, he is as unassuming as he can be. He follows the rule, is patient, and tells the tales as much like the person speaking as possible. Thus we get aboriginal English rather than the smoothness of someone else telling the story. When the story is long, Harney may summarize part of it, but mostly, he stays out of it.So we get a "rough" cut of the stories, but it is something much nearer to sitting around on a hillside or by a fire and listening to the stories that come from the Outback.
