    This is a free ebook written by Mark Coker, the founder of Smashwords, an ebook publishing company. It's a good read directed at authors, covering topics on what makes a good book, how to publish it, marketing, pricing, distribution. Even if you never plan to use Smashwords, it has a lot of good information. All readers are encouraged to share this free ebook, available for free on Smashwords.com, or for 99 cents on Amazon.https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...The rest of this review is not a review, but my personal journey with ebook publishing directed at authors of ebooks.I found it interesting that this book was published in March this year, shortly after Amazon announced its KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) Select program for authors. It's a "new option to make money and promote your book." The catch is you have to make your book exclusive to Kindle for at least 90 days, to get all the benefits of the program. You can even promote your book as free for up to 5 days in that period. When Amazon says exclusive, they mean exclusive. An author has to remove said book from all other distribution channels...Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Sony, and of course Smashwords and any place else it might be lurking. Any violation during the 90 days means said ebook will never appear on Kindle again. I have been following a number of authors who are in the KDP select program, and it appears to work well for authors with a backlist of books. A five-year-old book that has declined in sales gets new life, and the author also sees a surge in sales of more recent books.I must admit I am a long-time Amazon fan. Amazon was the first online store I ever shopped, beginning in 1999. I have long considered Amazon the gold-standard when it comes to online purchasing and customer service. But somehow the KDP select program smacks of monopoly.I am also a fan of Smashwords. They haven't been around very long (founded in 2008), but they filled a niche that satisfied my personal requirement in 2009. I self-published my first book in 2008 (in paperback), using Lulu.com. At that time Lulu was free. You paid only for the books you bought. If you wanted distribution, it cost $99 for an ISBN and distribution to all the online bookstores, Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Sony, and dozens of others all over the globe. Lulu didn't venture into ebook publishing until this year.When I did the research on how to publish an ebook, I learned I could do it directly through Kindle Direct Publishing, but that only covered Kindle format. I had my book up and running on Kindle in 2009. Then I learned about Smashwords, which covers all the other formats as well as mobi for Kindle. The only cost for distribution in the "Premium Catalog" is $9.95 for an ISBN. I don't understand why I needed another ISBN, but for $9.95 I didn't care. And they don't even ask for the money up front, they take it out of future sales. Now I'm really a fan. That $9.95 gets me international sales. OK, Amazon get me international sales too. But Smashwords gets my same ebook on B&N, Kobo, Sony, and get this...the Apple store, as well as some ebook readers I had never heard of. I'm always surprised at my numbers for iPad. Yeah I know the KDP Select devotees will point out that there is a free Kindle app for iPad, iPhone, Droid, whatever else you have. But when somebody with an iPad goes browsing in the Apple store, I want my book to be there.So when I read the chapters in this book entitled, "Maximize Distribution," and "Think Globally," I'm a believer. I'll be sticking with Smashwords for a while.

    Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success by Mark Coker is a thorough self-help manual about how to succeed as an ebook author. It is a good book for a soon-to-be-published author, but it is also helpful for an author who has already published a book, or several books for that matter.This book covers a lot of information, which is pleasing since it is free. You usually can’t go wrong with free, and this book is no exception. It emphasizes the importance of writing a well-written and edited book with a great title and cover design. It talks about the value of connecting well with your readers, distributing your ebook to as many online retailers as you can, giving your book away for free, developing your author platform, maximizing “virality,” and studying bestsellers in your genre. It covers the most popular cycles or trends of ebook sales, how to deal with negative reviews, and how to set an appropriate ebook price. It goes into adequate detail about twenty-eight “secrets” to having a successful ebook; plus, there are additional chapters of other helpful information.I have published four ebooks myself, and even though I have heard of most of the tips Coker provides - because of my five years of publishing experience - it is a well-written book with lots of insights that would help aspiring authors, new authors, and authors who don’t have much experience with editing, formatting, publishing, marketing, and networking, and anyone who is looking to learn a new tip or two to improve their ebook’s sales.

    Interesting and I picked up a few tips, but there was nothing there that is not obvious for any author who has already published a book and is on the marketing trail. Worth the read though.

    Not bad. Clearly Coker pushes his Smashwords version of the world. I can't say that I completely agree though. For example, Coker is clearly no fan of KDP Select from Amazon and while I agree that unpublishing you book to make it free on Amazon may be a bad idea, initially publishing your book this way and they moving to other distribution outlets may well be a good idea. Some of the advice is all over the map with contradictory recommendations and stories of every approach under the sun that have worked. I find that a less helpful than maybe 3 suggested paths to start from.There is plenty good in here but you may have to separate the wheat from the chaff.[FD: I am a Smashwords author of short fiction and non-fiction as well as a traditionally published author of non-fiction. I haven't decided how I plan to distribute my next project]

    This is a solid, friendly overview of a subject that is becoming increasingly need-to-know in today's publishing environment. Smashwords wunderkind Mark Coker offers several dozens "secrets" to success, all of which are important foundational knowledge on the topic. Most authors with any experience in e-book publishing will already be familiar with most of his points, but they're still good for a reminder. And if you're just starting out, this is an excellent place to begin.

    For starters this book is free. Every writer looking at becoming an author should read this. What you take away from it depends on your mindset. As with everything like this it is not the end all-be all to success. It is a guideline and should be used as such. Try some of the secrets and adjust the to suit you. It's all anyone can do.

    Less than 24 hoursI was seeing almost no sales (5 in four months). I joined a promotion at Smashwords where my book was free and actually saw some results, but when the promotion ended, I was back to almost nothing. Last night I started to read this book and decided to change the price to free. In less than 24 hours I'm already seeing results. It's not much, but it's better than the last four months. I'll put some of the other tips to work too.

    Secrets of Ebook Publishing Success and Smashwords Book Marketing Guide, by Mark Coker. Both of these are free ebooks.Mark Coker is the founder and current head guy at Smashwords. He started Smashwords when he and his wife had written the book Boob Tube, but–despite obvious promise–could not get an editor interested enough to publish it. He is now very involved in indie-publishing promotion and education, the entire process of Smashwords (which has grown exponentially the last few years), with writing self-publishing books and PR books, and in speaking engagements.So what is Smashwords? It seems that many of you would know what Smashwords is, by the sheer number of their customers, and yet I rarely if ever hear anyone reference it like they do Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Smashwords is an ebook “printer,” retailer, and distributor, probably the biggest and most active of its type. I used them in publishing the e-version of my first novel, Benevolent, and they act as my distributor to the likes of Barnes and Noble, iBook, Kobo, etc. To be completely honest, I have undervalued their services for the past year-and-a-half and viewed them primarily as a way to dole out free copies of my book for giveaways, but no longer. They are an extremely valuable distributor and promoter of indie books, and I plan to honor them and use them more than I have in the past. If you like ebooks, you should probably check them out. Just don’t mind the slightly clunky interface… concentrate on all the great books (and many for free).A few months ago, I ran aground of a copy of the free ebook, Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success. Since I value constant research into my field as part of my day job, I decided to insert this into my ever-growing list of TBRs. I was not disappointed. Now, it’s not exactly gripping prose, maybe more of a manual. And I was already aware of many things that it told me because, like I said, I do my homework. But there were some amazing golden nuggets of indie publishing in there. And it doesn’t just have to apply to ebooks in every circumstance (in other words, PODs as well). You can see my list of notes below, but I found this book illuminating and extremely useful. I would recommend it to all self-publishers. Nay, more than recommend; encourage.The previous book mentioned the Smashwords Book Marketing Guide many times, and since that was free as well, I read straight into that one. It really is a manual, and most of the text is a list of forty-one free marketing tools. It was not nearly as riveting a read (for a publishing geek such as I), but I can’t overemphasize the practicality of those tips and Coker’s perspective. Again, I recommend for all self-publishers, even if you don’t think you are going to use Smashwords as a distributor.__________Somewhat random notes from Secrets of Ebook Publishing Success and Smashwords Book Marketing Guide: My writing = creativity + intellect + talent + experience + sacrifice Never stop working to earn every page turn. Book descriptions don’t summarize the whole book, they tantalize the potential reader. Jealously guard your time from inefficiency and distraction. Invest your time, not food or shelter money. Book retailing is basically a consignment business. My Kindle royalties have halved since I published in 2013, because I refuse to give Kindle exclusivity. Giving books away for free is a best-kept secret of best-selling authors. Get to that deep backlist! A publication date used to mean one foot in the grave, now it means the beginning of a journey. Practice the never-ending book launch. Continue “rolling thunder” after the initial promotion. Trust your customers and supply chain partners. Remain positive, especially in your platform. In fact, project brand positivity. If your ebook’s pirated, consider it low-cost publicity. Ask yourself, “How can I make my book as easy as possible to discover, purchase, and enjoy?” Spend money editing, not marketing. Consider your beta readers as an aggregate. Negatives affect your negatively, not neutrally. Think permanent marketing infrastructure, like thousands of paths leading to your books. It can be beneficial to publish a series all at once. Full-length series perform best as ebooks. Marketing should feed a strong desire + urgency. Readers want emotional engagement. Switching a bestseller from indie to traditional publishing often results in a higher pricing and plummeting sales. Most overnight indie successes labored away for years in obscurity.     It's not the first time that I've read a Mark Coker's publication, I quite often refer to my Smashwords Style Guide (don't be fooled it's not just relevant to Smashwords), and therefore I was quite excited to find the time to read this one.Not just one off reads, they are useful over and over again to bone up. Full of words of wisdom, tips and tricks and examples of how his information has been successfully applied by others, his work is a must for anyone looking to publish, market and sell ebooks. As the Founder of Smashwords, he has proved he knows what he's talking about. I was particularly interested to see that he mentioned Shayne Parkinson, who has successfully managed to increase sales by offering the first in the series (Sentence of Marriage) as a free download in hooking the reader in to buy the remainder of the series. That is in fact what happened when I read it.He also mentioned Ruth Ann Nordin as somebody who offered An Inconvenient Marriage for free download, and the fact that some reads didn't like it, but others liked her work enough to actively seek out and pay for other titles she'd written. It's a long time ago now, but I think I was particularly kind about her book, but saw something in her that has made me purchase some of here other titles.After reading his book, I now feel totally vindicated about banging on endlessly about cover images ..... get a good one and it will help to generate interest from somebody who has never read anything by you before!!Rating:On the basis that I started it quite late in the evening and then couldn't put it down until the early hours - always hard to believe for a non-fiction book - plus the wisdom and insight to be gained I gave it a the full big Five-O ... it can be useful even if you don't use, or never intend to use Smashwords. Highly recommended.Errors/Bug Bears:None, as this was an excellently delivered and executed product. Kudos Mr Coker.

    This is a gem of a book for the price (free!). It's a good read for aspiring authors who are just starting to self-publish and need some guidance getting started in the seemingly chaotic, unorganized, and ever-expanding galaxy of the self-publishing industry. As founder of Smashwords.com, Mark Coker leans heavily on Smashwords’ self-publishing platform to help the reader understand what it takes to publish and distribute an e-book(s) successfully. The book complements his other free companion pieces, the “Smashwords Book Marketing Guide” and “Smashwords Style Guide.” The three books together are great primers for using Smashwords and leveraging it as a distribution and marketing tool.Coker’s book offers 28 secrets to publishing a successful e-book. Some “secrets” are common sense, and the book doesn’t go into great deal on how to take advantage of them. The biggest “secret” to success is to write a great book that resonates with readers, but Coker doesn’t explain how to do it. That’s up to you. He does, however, generally point writers in the right direction, getting them to think about the different elements of self-publishing success. For example, he suggests writers think beyond the price to generate sales. Should a book be priced at $0.99 or $9.99? It depends on the writer’s objective. Price is just one aspect of book sales an author should consider.Coker does not offer as many specifics in this book as he did in his marketing and style guides, but I appreciate the holistic view of self-publishing he offers. Experienced self-published authors may have a few “duh” moments when something strikes them as common sense. Nevertheless, it’s worthwhile for any writer to read this book and learn from one of the masters of the self-publishing industry.I give Coker’s book five stars and highly recommend it to all writers. If nothing else, the price point -- free -- should be an incentive.

    The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success est intéressant, je suppose. Certaines évidences, mais surtout des moments de réalisation. Comme les habitudes des acheteurs, les prix à apposer son livre et le marketing de livre électronique. Pour quelqu'une comme moi qui a beaucoup de difficulté à faire les premiers pas vers les autres, IRL ou dans la vie virtuelle, il y a abordé plusieurs trucs de façon assez vague. C'est sûrement pour nous redirigé vers son autre ebook gratuit, aussi, . Livre électronique qui sera ma prochaine lecture.Je patauge dans l'écriture depuis un bout et les sujets de mes histoires ne sont pas des sujets favoris des maisons d'édition. Smashwords est un bon endroit où jeter sa ligne pour la pêche à l'infos. Et ce ebook, malgré quelques erreurs de frappe, de formatting (j'ai téléchargé le format PDF), est très instructif.Mark Coker supporte ses informations avec plusieurs données et quelques années d'expérience dans le monde de la publication indépendante avec son site Smashwords.     The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success by Mark Coker.All writers on Goodreads should read this. For anyone who is even toying with the idea of going 'Indie' this truly is a must read. Although Coker is the founder of Smashwords, currently the largest ebook distributer, this book (and likely all of his) is by no means a mere advert for his company. This is a data-rich, clearly written 'how-to' book for anyone interested in being or becoming an Independent Writer. His passion and interest in Epublising and the changes it brings to communicating the written word, are clear and invigorating. For example, I hadn't realised that paper books shipped to brick and mortar bookstores only have a few weeks to sell, after which time they are shipped back to the distributor for a full refund to the bookseller. And then they are 'pulped' or remaindered. Hence the term 'Pulp Fiction' -- the stuff that doesn't sell. Yet with electronic books, not only do they have the more organic time frame of...forever to possibly take off, you can tinker with them even after they are placed with the ebook sellers. Although of course, as Coker advises repeatedly, it is very important to make your book the best it can be BEFORE placing it on the electronic book shelves. You are your brand when you are a writer, and you only get one chance to make a first impression. Ebook publishing is a real revolution in the very way writers and readers interact, truly democratising the process into an ongoing conversation. No excuses. If you write, read this.

    Feel like I already reviewed this a while back, maybe around the time I published my second book. And I know I read it first back when I published my first book. Anyway, in case I'm just imagining that, here goes.Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success is one of the other free books you can get from the guy who runs Smashwords. The main one, you'll recall, is the Smashwords Style Guide, which is absolutely essential, if not for any other reason than that it's impossible to publish a book on Smashwords without reading it. This book, meanwhile? Not so much. It might be useful for people who aren't already very familiar with social media, online self-promotion, that sort of thing. Since it's free, I guess you might as well at least pick up a copy and skim it. I've read it twice and published two books now, and I still haven't added a link to my books to my email signature, one of the main tips.The other problem here, and the thing I found more obnoxious, is that you get the sense that this was written in response to KDP Select, the Amazon promotion where you can juice your stats by giving your book away for free, but you have to make it exclusive to Amazon for 90 days as a condition. It seems like you're reminded every six pages or so of the importance of not (temporarily) removing your books from Smashwords, and how the key to making money as an author is having your books available in as many bookstores as possible. Quick, name five online bookstores other than Amazon. See, you can't do it! To think, someone more gullible than me might read that and think it's good advice.

    This book was written by the founder of Smashwords, a free platform for indi authors to distribute their ebooks to various retailers.Over all, I found the book very realistic and encouraging. It didn't tell me I was going to be a bestselling author and a multi-millionaire within a matter of weeks. It emphasized the fact that writing, as with any career, requires a lot of hard work, dedication, practical business sense, and a certain amount of luck.This book outlines many marketing strategies and other "secrets" to ensure that your book is as successful. as possible. I found the writer repeted himself a lot and over emphasized his points. There were also a lot of graphs and charts depicting the results of various studies. I wish the author had talked more openly about these statistics, instead of making vague references to the charts and graphs because I'm blind and thus such visual forms of information are useless to me. However, I do realize that most of the people reading this book are sighted and wouldn't have this issue.I would recommend this book to anyone considering a career as a self-published indi author. But I'd also say don't put your eggs all in one basket--if you have the chance to be published traditionally, take it!

    I published my first eBook in June, and then my second and third in December and January. I thought I was a bit more knowledgeable after the first experience, but there is much I didn't know. For example, I didn't appreciate the flexibility of an eBook as opposed to a physical book, meaning that I didn't think to add new information as it became available. Because of Mark's suggestions, I added an "About the Author" section and information about my other two books in each of my books. I also gave readers several ways to stay connected with me.Another thing I did as a result of reading this book was to add more content to my first book. People seemed to love the first book, but there were a few complaints it wasn't long enough. I didn't think there was much I could do since it was already published. Well, duh, I can add to it! I seriously had never considered that. As for spreading my book out across multiple platforms, I did that but I wasn't impressed with the results or how long it takes to get paid. I like Amazon and plan to remain exclusive with them for all of my books from now on.

    This is a great read for indie authors, and I'm surprised that many more haven't read it. Smashwords gets a bad rap these days, but I've always been a fan. As an author who has books on Smashwords, I consider this book to be the philosophy that undergirds the website. I appreciate Coker and Smashwords more after reading this.Without exception, all of the advice that Coker gives is sound. If you've read a ton of indie books on self-publishing, you probably won't find anything new here, but the book is still worth reading because Coker expresses his ideas very well, and in a timeless way. The book is broken into short several hundred word chapters that can be consumed quickly, probably in an hour or two. I read it on my phone and finished in about an hour. Also, the book is free. I usually don't talk about price in my reviews, but this book is a good value that you shouldn't pass up if you're wanting to hone your self-publishing skills. It's an awesome goodwill gesture from Coker. Unlike some self-publishing books, it's sincere, and Coker really seems to want to make the industry better for all authors. I would recommend.

    Every time I read one of Coker's books, I feel as if I'm taking one of my favorite college prerequisite's courses once again. The Secrets to Ebook publishing is the kind of read that keeps indie authors such as myself having continuous "Aha Moments." From sharing the best way to sell your books, or the reason why your e-book may simply not be having any success at all, this book is great for all authors simply to trying to raise the bar revenue wise. I liked the fact that there were some secrets I already had knowledge on. On the other hand, I loved the fact that there were a lot of secrets listed that I simply were not aware of. The information provided allows me now to look upon the e-books that I write from a wide range of various angles. The e-book terminology towards the end of the book comes in very handy as well. More importantly, Coker chooses to provide all this priceless information for free to any author who's simply interested at getting better at their craft. Thanks again Coker.

    At the beginning I mistakenly thought that an indie writer was someone from India writing a book. Finally I got it. And I did not see myself being an indie author until I read this book.I am an author and I have been published, self published, in the traditional paper world.There is a new Ebook economy growing rapidly with so much potential that any author should try to take advantage of this opportunity and jump into Ebook publishing.This book is a great source of information and wisdom to help any author to get the picture of the Ebook world as it is still today in mid 2013.There are so many helpful tips about Ebook publishing that involve not only distribution, but marketing and the importance of review and editing the manuscript, that makes reading this book a must.I am not giving it a 5 because of the style and because there are some repetitions, but still it is a wonderful peace of work.     After attending Mark's workshop at the RWA National Convention, I decided to read this book and learn even more about E-Book Publishing. I'm really glad I did, because I've picked up on some great suggestions to make things a whole lot easier. Let's face it, for many of us there's so much to learn that it's overwhelming. For an author who's been in the game for a while, it's a good way to reinforce already learned secrets. But for the newbie writer, this book is a one-stop shop!An important point Mr. Coker made time and time again - so I want to reiterate - selling e-books won't happen overnight. It's takes time to build your career. But on the virtual bookshelves today, we really do have the time.

    Mark Coker shares a lot of good information in The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success, though much of his advice could hardly be classified as secret! For example, the first secret he lists is "Write a Great Book." If you hang in there, though, you will find that this book is quite informative and could even be inspirational to the budding e-book author. The most exciting information Coker shares is his data illustrating the rapidly growing potential market for the self-published author.Many well-known authors are making their work available as e-books, and despite some very pitiful examples of self-published work, there are more and more gems out there, and the stigma of independent (indie) publishing is abating.

    An excellent resource for self-publishing tips and ideas. Perhaps a bit dated due to the rapid pace of change in the self-pubbing world, but most of the "Secrets" are basic strategies that apply universally no matter what the indie publishing climate.Prose was straightforward, well organized, and progressed logically from first steps to last and getting deeper into strategies and techniques toward the end. A nice appendix with web links given for useful self-pub websites and a thorough glossary close the book with a positive, take action finish.I wish I had read it a few years ago, when it was first published. I would have jumped on the self-publishing train back then and not bothered with traditional agents and publishers.

    Mark Coker's excellent resource helps de-mystify the world of e-publishing. It's realistic and practical - advising that there are bestselling e-publishers out there, but most of us will never achieve that level, and that's okay because some books will provide a lot of ongoing revenue and some might only provide a little. The most encouraging insight is that e-books can be revised over time. If your book isn't selling, you can re-market, re-write, and re-design everything about it. So there's a lot of trial and error involved, as opposed to traditional publishing, in which Coker explains that most of your chance for success depends on what the book does upon its initial release. Great help and direction for anyone who wants to start publishing their own e-books!

    Great IdeasThe eBook covers almost everything an indie author needs to get started. What I liked most was how he backs up his assertions with real data, not just assumptions. The discussion about KDP's select program was interesting, but you need to keep in mind that he runs Smashwords and he is not entirely objective. That being said, due to the recent algorithm changes, the benefits from the select program is greatly diminished. In fact, the benefits do not outweigh the costs of exclusivity anymore.After my period ends, I am going to offer my sci-fi book at additional retailers.

    This is a must for every writer who wrote a book and then lost hair and got sick while a masterpiece sat gathering dust on the shelf. Mark has written an easy to understand book that really makes one think. To all the writers who cannot choose between traditional publishing and Indie - read this book. Simply explained and full of really good advice, I urge all writers to add this to their book shelf. Nothing is guaranteed but this book opens up a whole new area for the writer to explore.Ray Stone (Author)
