Shay is half human, half shalott. Her blood is craved by vampires and because of this shalotts are extinct. For the last eighty years, Shay has been a slave, sold and beaten again and again, all because of a curse that makes it impossible for her to escape. And when Shay is to be sold again at an auction, the last person she expected to buy her was the vampire Viper, who she recently saved from a witch attack. And despite her unwanted fascination with Viper, she hates all vampires because one of them killed her father. After years of being a clan chief of a large and deadly vampire clan, Viper is used to being obeyed. And because of his sinful good looks he’s used to being desired by most women, to getting what he wants. And what he desperately wants is the beautiful shalott who saved his life. But Shay is distrustful and he needs her to want him as badly as he craves her, and after buying saving her from the auction he’s intent on winning her trust and seducing her into his bed.But a dangerous and ancient evil also wants Shay, and Viper will need all skill and cunning to keep the Shalott he’s come to love safe.Since the moment she had encountered this vampire weeks ago he had invaded her dreams and made her remember sensations better left forgotten.Shay has been so badly treated over the years, but despite all that she still has such a big heart, loyal to those few she considers a friend, and willing to risk everything to protect them, to safe those that has been hurt. I loved that she was such a fighter, so very brave and so determined to stand up for herself and to protect her heart. It took quite a while for her to trust Viper, but in the end her love for him was beautiful. “I want to wrap myself in you until I can get you to stop haunting my dreams.”Viper was excellent, so determined to win Shay’s trust and to keep her safe. I loved that he wanted to protect her from all evil and that he was willing to risk everything for her. That she was the most important thing to him."I thought I would never find you, but I did. I couldn't let you go. Not when I needed you so desperately. I will never let you go."Their romance was beautiful and I loved every moment of it.The plot was excellent and there were so many new characters introduced, like the Ravens and Shay’s three-foot gargoyle friend, Levet, who was hilarious. This PNR series is fantastic so far and I’m enjoying it very much. Highly recommended to all PNR fans.

Much better than the first story I enjoyed Viper's Character and I like Shay as well. I got into their story and I could enjoy their relationship the story line was good. The first book was thin and I didn't really feel connected To Dante or Abby but in the this book I liked both Abby and Dante more and I feel like whatever was missing in the first book came out in the second!!!

Great followup to the first Guardians of Eternity book. Shay is a half-blood Shalott, some sort of demon whose blood is a major attractant to vampire's. She is a slave that was held by the coven of witches in the first book. She helped dante, Abby and Viper to defeat the witch.Viper is the leader of the Chicago clan of vampire's. Immensely wealthy and dangerous gorgeous. He is attracted to Shay and buy's her at an auction to be his slave. Then all hell breaks loose. Some other demon is after Shay for her blood and will stop at nothing until he has her in his possession.Well written and extremely hot! I really enjoyed the interaction of Viper and Shay and the interaction and dialogue with Shay and her 3 foot tal friend Levet, a gargoyle. I love gorgoyles anyway and collect them.

Embrace the Darkness is the second book in Alexandra Ivy's Guardians of Eternity series. I started reading this book for a group challenge that I was taking part of. For a while I had owned the fifth book but had never actually gotten up the interest to actually read it. So, I figured this challenge would be the perfect change for me to get started on the series. However, I was a little iffy on participating in the challenge at first because I had not read the first book in the series. After expressing this fear, I was informed that you don't really need to read the first book understand everything that happens in the second one. I am going to dispute that fact, though. Although my not reading the first book in no way completely affected my reading of the second one, it would have been nice to read it. The first one dwells on Abby and Dante, and while they are not the main characters in Embrace the Darkness, they do play a somewhat major role and it would have been nice to understand their story a little bit better. Also, it seems like the first book introduces Viper and Shay and some of their individual stories, and knowing that before hand could have contributed to my slight confusion when they first started mentioned in the first time they met.Despite all that, I thought the book was fantastic. Admittedly, there were a few parts that were somewhat boring compared to other parts of the novel, but they in no way diverted my interest away from the book. I was immediately intrigued by the mystery that Shay and Viper's relationship presented and the puzzle of how they were going to free her from Evor's evil, grimy clutches. The sex scenes were awesome, and I definitely appreciated the extreme sexual tension that was evident from the get-go with these two.Viper is an interesting character. It was nice to have some of the traditional qualities of vampires while also having some of the new advances made in vampire life incorporated into his life and the overall story. I thoroughly enjoyed Viper's seemingly ever-present amusement. It was refreshing to have a male lead who was highly amused all the time and rarely quick to anger. Of course, I loved the way he treated Shay like a princess to be treasured and the fact that she was unused to it. And, I'm sure that the sexy vampire is a wonderful lover.Shay, while being a somewhat clichéd heroine in that she refuses to trust the hero, was a great character. The only thing I really didn't like was the fact that, at times, she was extremely rude and mean to Viper. I felt horrible that she had been held as a slave for so many years and the fact that her father was murdered by vampires. I appreciated her friendship and loyalty towards Levet. I was happy when she went to save Viper as he was sacrificing himself for her and I was utterly ecstatic when she finally admitted that she loved him. Also, I found it highly amusing that she had an orgasm when she gave Viper her blood for the first time.Other interesting characters included Dante, Abby, and Styx. I simply cannot wait to learn more about the three of them and the many other characters in the series as I will definitely be continuing with it.

This second in a series has been on my TBR for quite a while. I have had a few of these on my shelf for years now but the first book took so long for me to finish. Abby and Dante just didn't pull me back. I really like Shay from book one and want to give it a second chance for certain as the first was good, just not good enough. This one was definitely good enough.Although it is the type Vampire romance with the brooding vampire trying to resist this pull of attraction and the woman with a hatred of vampires in general, it has a good subplot of vampire politics and skewed loyalties. At one point Shay is TSTL but I guess she redeems herself as she couldn't have waited for Viper's sake. And the gargoyle is great but I feel bad for the water sprite. OK, that doesn't help others choose whether to read the book but it'll help me to remember what happened in the book if I come back to the review. :-)So I liked the characters and the over all story. I thought that the couple had a lot of chemistry though Shay has real emotional commitment issues, which takes away a little from the hotness. A really good PNR and definitely better than the first.

This would've been a 5 star for me if the h, Shay, didn't annoy me for most of the book. I understand that she had been enslaved for most of her life. I also get that she had a grudge against vampires. But geez Viper proved he could be trusted over and over and over again. Yet she still pushed him away, gave attitude and insulted him. When Viper needs her most she does pull through for him but for me it was too little too late. Now Viper on the other hand I adored and that's why this still gets 4 stars. He was arrogant and cocky and I loved him. He is fiercely loyal to those he cares about. He thinks nothing of putting himself in danger to save others. It was great catching up with Dante and Abby as well. When I knew the next story was about Styx I wasn't sure if I'd want to read it. He did redeem himself for me though.

Okay I must say this book is a 100x's better than the 1st book! The great thing is u don't have to read the 1st book to become well aquainted with the characters in this one. Viper, DUDE IS BAD! I love the dynamic with he and Shay. This one was very interesting in given the details of Shay's Past and Present and how Viper, whether she admits it or not, is the key to helping her unlock the closet and put her demons to rest so to speak. Levet "the Gargoyle" and Shay's best friend is so adorable and hilarious! U will love him. The action, passion, heart felt moments are non stop in this one. There are a few Laugh Out Loud moments as well. I don't want to give anything away, so READ this one! You will love it. The story, the plot, & the message.

Viper is a clan leader in Chicago, and in the last book, a half-shallot demon helped out his friends when they were up against some horrible odds. She was a slave of some evil witches, and Viper can't seem to get her out of his mind. When he finds her up for auction, of course he can't help himself-he bids on her. Shay is the last of her kind-the shallot demons. They were bred to be assassains and Shay is bound to her slave owner, a troll, by a death curse. If he is killed, she'll die. But shallot blood is a powerful thing to vampires. It is an aphrodesiac, it can heal...very valuable. And Shay expects Viper to drain her daily for his amusement. But he treats her more like a guest than a slave. A guest he desires. But he won't force her, and she slowly comes to like him. Even love him. Eventually the Anasso- the vampire king-finds out about her and wants her blood. See, he's addicted to drugs, well, drugged out humans. He has a special supply of addicted humans who he drinks from every night. shay's blood would heal his addiction, as it did when he killed her father for that reason. Viper plans on keeping Shay alive. But his friend/brother vampire, Styx, the Anasso's right hand man, and the leader of the Ravens-Anasso's personal body guards wants the Shallot demon blood for the Anasso-he foolishly has faith in a sick mind. In the end, Styx tortures his friend Viper for information on Shay, Viper of course won't talk, but Shay rescues him, only to be dragged in front of the Anasso anyway. Styx then man's up and helps save Viper and Shay, however it makes him the next Anasso when Viper kills the current one. I'm not much for Styx. I think his redemption could have been a little better. But he just doesn't get how Viper would sacrifice anything-the good of the vampire community even, for his mate Shay. Styx is next..maybe he'll finally get what it means to be mated.

Lucu (walo kadang biasa aja lucunya, hahahaha) tapi juga sayang pada ShayKemudian Styx, hmmm another tortured hero, dan mengingat bukunyamendapat award serta biasanya aku selalu fallin in love sama tortured hero...We'll wait and see...

I think this one was better than the 1st one. Maybe because I understood more of the world building, not sure. And I liked the 1st one. In fact Dante & Abby make a few appearances, but never overtake our H/h in importance. Our H is Viper the vamp from #1 and our h is Shay, the Shallot halfdemon, also from #1. So we already have a history with them, which was nice. Not just the last 3 pages from #1 but a good substantial background which meant we could get straight into the story.Everybody wants the Shallot demon, not just because they taste extra delicious but because they have healing blood. So you know when the story opens and Shay is on the Demon Auction block, things are not going to be good for her.Viper has become obsessed since the great battle to save Abby, the Phoenix Goddess, from #1 and he makes sure he buys Shay. Something else is also desperate for Shay, and they don't wanna take no for an answer.Shay is under a curse, and should her owner die she returns to the Troll who keeps selling her for a hefty profit. She is also friends with a mini gargoyle named Levet, who I'm sure was supposed to come across as the lovable but snarky sidekick, sadly he didn't do it for me. Though he did have a few good ideas.Enjoyed it and will definitely be reading more in this series.

I was so excited when I was finally able to figure out how to pull this eBook from the online library. It was so worth the extra effort. I fell for Viper in When Darkness Comes. He was pure hunky arrogant vampire. Smooth operator in every way. With Viper's loyalty and his fight to keep Shay safe I was over the top for Viper. And, the anticipation of a bloody fight I almost forgot there would have to be a happily ever after. Great Storytelling. And Shay, a sassy warrior is always my favorite heroine. She fought, she refused to turn her back, and most importantly, she learned how to shop.... ;-)The characters had all that's needed to make a story great. Some you love, some you hate, some are sleezy and you can't wait to see them squished like a bug. And, some you wait for them to turn into the good guy, so they can have their own story. Favorite line in the story.... "You will never be alone in the dark again".... Swoon worthy hero. Most profound statement in the story.... "He might be technically dead, but he wasn't buried".... I guess I enjoyed this tale more then book one. It was written just the way I like it, therefore it has given me another PNR author to add to my list of favorites. Excellent read.

Oh...... I really loved this book. Viper is wonderful. His character is and will be one of my favorites for sure. Shay is also great. I like a strong willed female character that is more then willing to a badass with the boys. The love story between these two was beautiful. Not dumb and mushy but very realistic. The side characters like Levet are priceless as well. Can't help falling in love with him. I also like how Ivy sets up the next storyline by introducing you to the characters with just enough curiosity to want to learn more. The first book of this series was good but this one was great. Excited to continue.

Viper at last!Embrace the Darkness is a passionate romance that takes up the story several weeks after the end of When Darkness Comes (Guardians of Eternity, Book 1). If you remember nothing else from the previous book, you will remember Viper. Vampire clan leader, Viper was the bored and beautiful fallen angel surrounded by hedonistic decadence, who in aiding Dante and Abby, came into contact with the beautiful demon Shay who saved Viper's life. This brief encounter marked them both and they are both haunted by dreams of the other Unable to forget Shay, Viper has searched for her and finding her for sale at a demon auction he knows he must possess her. Shay the last living Shalott demon, a race of assasins whose blood is powerful aphrodisiac and a prized delicacy to vampires, is enraged to have been purchased by Viper. Some thanks for saving his life. She figures that Viper's just out for a tasty snack and she's not thrilled to be on the menu. But blood is not what Viper wants from Shay, he wants her in his bed so that he can free himself from the obsession she inspires. Viper surprises Shay, he treats her reverently and is willing to use his immortal patience to gain her willing surrender. Shay has been a slave for years. She is surprised to be treated with kindness and finds herself unable to resist this magnetic and sensual vamp. And as Shay finally surrenders to the passion that Viper stirs within her, Viper finds that instead of purging his obsession, bedding Shay only strengthens his need for her. He finds himself even more addicted to her and not just in bed. He loves holding her and even just watching her sleep. But even as the relationship develops between Shay and Viper, a powerful evil seeks Shay for her magical blood. Viper is willing to suffer torture and even to sacrifice his race and his own immortal existence to keep Shay safe, but it looks like that may not be enough. And should he fail, Shay will be sacrificed so that evil may flourish. But in the final climatic battle it will takes everyone's skills and then some to beat the bad guy and save Shay and Viper. Author Alexander Ivy has really hit her stride with Embrace the Darkness. Though it was difficult to work into the summary here, she did a great job of fleshing out Shay and Viper - who can relate to what Shay suffered as a slave more than you would imagine from the power he holds now. For a romance focused book, Ivy managed a surprising amount of substance in the background plot and the final battle was actually well done and not just some easy toss off. In addition to taking advantage of characters Dante and Abby who return from the previous book, Ivy has again created several wonderful supporting characters. There is Levitt a height and courage challenged gargoyle whose fierce loyalty to Shay ends up allowing him to rise up past his limitations to make him a powerful ally. And then there is Styx, second in command of the Ravyns, a group that has brought the vampires out of savagery and Styx has dedicated himself to maintaining the balance necessary to preserve his people. A powerful warrior, Styx's honor is being corrupted by a vow of loyalty as he tries to hold true to his people and his leader, as the leader degenerates into madness and evil. And like she did with Viper in the last book, Ivy left me wanting more of Styx who will be the hero in her next book. I really enjoyed Embrace the Darkness, even though I am not a vampire fanatic, and I am really looking forward to her next book.

Heroine is a useless, foul mouth, annoying brat. Hero wears velvet pants with silver shirts unbuttoned to his navel. When not in that attire he's running around in a silk dressing gown (robe). The French gargoyle best friend only knows one word of French - “Sacrebleu" which he says over and over and over again. And then there was the prepubescent dialogue: "Holy moly, Devil’s freaking balls, Holy guacamole, raving loon, holy freaking cow, Head Honcho (yup, in caps)."And it ended in in a corny mountain of ridiculousness.

At least this time the H had ivory skin. Huh. So since the next one is about an ancient Aztec, does this mean he has petrified wood skin? No?Please authors, stop with the random gemstone alliterations when referring to a character's skin tone. It was bad enough to find one described as marble alabaster (particularly when one realizes that alabaster is a generic term used for both gypsum and calcite, two very soft minerals). Now we got someone described as having skin the color of an elephant tusk. Is that a live elephant or a piece stored in somebody's jewelry box? Ivory does yellow when kept in the dark. Oh right; these are VAMPIREs. Silly me. Of COURSE they mean the yellowed, discolored kind. Oh. You mean they mean the white, newly carved kind?So about the story... same old, same old. Vampire (male) spots female he begins obsessing over, gets her in his clutches, realizes someone else wants her for more sinister reasons, seduces her while keeping one step ahead of the bad guys...Ok, what I don't understand is this; in book one of the series, we have a h who is possessed by a spirit who can like, wipe out all demons (including vampires). Our H/h are hiding in this couple's residence and...are driven out of this house by... various critters who can be fried with a thought by this woman. Why? Are we stupid? Well, yeah; the H does a bit of self-flagellation there because he let themselves be driven into a trap. Still... Is this what we have to look forward to with the whole series; H/h take up refuge in house with possessed woman, get run out by the possibility of attack of residence by beings who have no chance in hades of surviving a battle with the spirit, and get caught by the bad guys? Good God I hope not, else one or more of these books will surely hit the wall.

A while back I picked up When Darkness Comes The first in the series of The Guardians of Eternity. I didn't take a liking to the book. I said there was a character in the book that grabbed my attention even though he wasn't a big part in it. Viper. What a name, almost cliche. I later found out he was the protagonist in the second in the series. Every time I wanted to pick up a romance book I thought about his character, which is so not like me. After all it's a character in a book. Viper. Which was in a book I didn't even care for. His name called to me. Viper. I did say in that review I would try the series another time. I gave in...Viper ....I picked it up ....Viper..... and decided since his character wouldn't let me go, I might as well give in and satiate my need for this character. VIPER! Embrace the Darkness was a dash of smooth and a pinch of sexy. Viper seemed unsure how to get Shay to step out of her shell and drop the shields. Shay had to battle her entire life just to survive. Embrace the Darkness was quick and never slowed pace. Some of the time I couldn't help but compare this to Twilight. ERRR a More ADULT version of it. Shay however was not as wimpy as Bella. The story bases are different but one that can be appreciated. I did enjoy the jazzing between all that characters. I even felt as if I knew the secondary characters. There were a few points I didn't care for again with the catch phrases. Instead of "Bloody Hell" it was "Devil's Balls". Though I believe there was a bloody hell in there some where. I am learning to look past that. The book was only slightly predictable. Also the names were very 80's. Not much to gripe about with this one. Over all a great read. I have already picked up the next in the series..Dark Everlasting! Viper may have pulled me into this series I am hoping Styx can keep me holding on.

The main characters weren’t interesting enough. The story dragged. At times I wanted it to be over.STORY BRIEF:Shay is half human and half Shalott (demon). Her blood is an aphrodisiac to vampires. She is the last Shalott in existence. A curse binds her to the troll Evor. He puts her on the auction block to sell as a slave. Viper (a vampire clan leader) buys her with the highest bid. She expects to be kept as a slave and is wary to find that he treats her as a guest. A powerful evil entity wants Shay and sends hellhounds, demons, and others to get her. She and Viper must fight and at times flee. A relationship between Viper and Shay develops through lust and more. A fun part of the story is Shay’s friend Levet (a three-foot tall gargoyle), another slave of Evor.REVIEWER’S OPINION:The Shay and Viper characters weren’t entertaining enough. Their story seemed to drag, but got more interesting toward the end. The demons, vampires and others having conflicts and fighting for power was similar to a lot of other books. Some of Viper’s past was merely referred to and should have been better explained. The best parts were with the actions of Levet toward the end. He delighted me. He did some interesting things. I would give 4 stars for Levet’s activities, but since his parts were minor, I’m staying with 2 stars for the main story. Also because at times, I wanted it to be over.DATA:Story length: 330 pages. Swearing language: moderate, including religious words. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 6. Total number of sex scene pages: 21. Setting: unknown time possibly current day Chicago, Illinois, and other Midwest areas. Copyright: 2007. Genre: paranormal romance.

Read January 2014 -- 4.25stars reallySome time has passed since (When Darkness Comes)Shay, the shalott demon that helped thwart the witches, has been returned to her owner. Evor wastes no time trying to lease Shay out again via an auction which Viper has cleverly arranged to attend. Both Shay & Viper have been haunted with dreams of each other since their abrupt parting after the witch incident. However someone more sinister than the witches is trying to obtain Shay for themselves and will go through anyone to get her. Viper has no plans to give up Shay under any circumstances let alone without a fight. The pacing here was much faster and I liked both Viper & Shay so much better than the previous installment and lead characters. The chemistry that sparked between Shay & Viper had an opportunity to get of control it was so hot. There was a lot to like about Shay, her warrior attitude, her adjustments to a different lifestyle and the compassion she showed to those even less fortunate than herself. Viper was just as smooth and effortless here as in the previous installment and he wore his alpha suit well. The secondary characters here (especially Levert, Styx & Santiago) and the villain sprung from the page with full personalities and owned the chapters they were in, each straining for their own tale. Expanding the world to include more sups can only be a good thing. The tension surrounding Shay's problems was woven quite well to include all the key players smoothly even borrowing Abby and Dante from the previous installment and kept the pages flying with both the action and suspense pieces at a good level.

I loved this book and vampire novels are really not my choice of genre, although I did read the first book in this series and loved it, too.The chemistry between Viper and Shay was incredible. It'd been awhile since I'd read the first novel so I went back and skimmed through the last half of the first book just to refresh my memory on how they came to meet. At the end of the first book, I didn't have any idea that Shay and Viper would hook up. I don't think Shay was even named at that point. She was simply called the Shallot.I found Viper to be honorable and sincere and she really didn't trust him because she knew vampires needed her blood to heal which is why this story happened at all. The leader of all the vampires had fed on a drug addict...well, lots of them from the sounds of it...and he wanted Shay to save him by draining her. Well, Viper was in love with her before he found all of this out and the war was on.Shay was a strong character and knew her place and loved Viper just as much as he loved her which was proven when he was taken captive by Styx and the Ravens and he was mercilessly whipped and beaten because the big shot wanted him to summon Shay through the amulet he'd received when he'd bought her at a slave auction. She fully expected to be treated like a slave and that never happened which goes back to Viper being a vampire of honor. That scene proved her love for him.It was a fast-paced novel and with Levet's smart remarks, it was funny at times, too.I loved the book and am going to read the next one.

This is book 2 in the Guardian of Eternity Series. I did not want to put this book down.Shay was born half human and half shallot demon and has lived her life as a slave, when the vampire clan leader Viper buys her she is ready to fight him but she finds there is a darker force that needs to be conquered. Someone wants her blood for it's healing powers. Viper, Shay and Levet (a 3ft gargoyle) set out to find whoever wants Shay dead.It was one of those stories that grip you so you don't want to put it down. The relationship that develops between Viper and Shay is just great. Add to that Dante & Abby and Styx from the other books and I just love it more.

Good book. I love Viper. Shay was ok. I liked her for the most part. Again, this is a easy, quick read. Super depth, not so much. But fun just the same. Some things seemed a little inconsistent with the first book. Before, all the demons were after Abby, now they avoid her. And nothing was mentioned about Viper's nefarious businesses.Anyway, Viper and Shay are questing to find the evil being that wants to capture Shay and drain her blood. They also are trying to break the curse that binds Shay's life to a troll's. Quick, easy read. Could have been better, could have been worse. Not well edited.

I really enjoyed the 2nd book in this Guardians of Eternity series. Like the first one, it had a great mix of romance and humor which I really love in a book. I loved our hero Viper, he was hilarious, and our heroine Shay was a mix of strength and vunerability that I also liked. Prior to this series I had never read anything by Alexandra Ivy, but she has my attention now, so I would suggest to anyone to give this series a chance, hopefully the remaining books in the series are all just as good as the first two! Book 3 here I come!!

This is a soul-mate type paranormal romance that features a vampire (Viper) who falls for a half demon/half human (Shay). Shay is the last Shallot demon, a race driven to extinction because their blood is an aphrodisiac for vampires. Her blood also heals extreme illness and wounds - which is why certain other vampires (not Viper) are hunting her. The chemistry between the lead characters is good, and the story interesting. I wasn't completely sucked in by this book, but I liked it. This is book 2 of the series.

My Rating :Star : 3.5/5Bikini : 2/5

Viper, Viper, Viper . . .Oh that vamp. . . He had me with his appearance in When Darkness Comes. His club. His skills. His aura. To have Shay and Viper together. What more could this girl ask for? I was hoping after their meeting they would make their way to each other. But the way the get together was a bit off putting. I reminded me of days best left pushed to the back of the world's history. The insight and drama and of course Levet. It was nice to see what Dante and Abby have been up to.

This book was a million times better than the first book in this series. It was like a different author. The characters had a much more involved relationship and the story line was more exciting. I loved these characters which seem to fit together much more and they were a lot less annoying. I am glad I did not give up on this series. I would recommend you just skip the first book and start with this one. I am on the third book now and it is also very good so far. I guess this teaches me a lesson. Sometimes an author deserves a second chance!
