This was my first book from the author, Carol White and it will by no means be my last. Whilst as a general rule, I'm not a lover of short stories - this collection by Ms White was a thoroughly entertaining read. Each story is unique and stands alone, the characters are well-constructed and in many cases, found a place in my heart almost immediately. This is not always easy to do with a short story, where the action is fast-paced and there is only a minimal period of time to round out the characters. In each case, Ms. White has provided a unique story which was entertaining and in some cases, quite thought provoking. I particularly liked the novelette 'Reptilian' which is included with the book.I would recommend this book to... well, pretty much everyone - there's something to please most readers and I never once had the impression of repetitivity with Ms. White's writing. Each short story stands well alone and it was a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

A nice read. Several short stories and a novella. I really liked the short story Sitting Pretty and the novella Reptilian. I could see some of the short stories being developed into full novels - they would make good books. The short stories were enjoyable - many were slice of life type stories. There were two I didn't care for - one about a vampire and another about sharks, but the rest of the stories were fun to read.

This book is a combination of short stories and novella length writing--I found it a good read as I could read a short while and complete a story whenever I had a few minutes. The stories are varied, some with humor, romance, several with good character interest--I recommend it as a light reading choice to intersperse with other readings and activities--you will smile at many of the endings.

I loved every story in this book...well, except the mob story. Didn't care for that one too much. Anyway, the title story and the ending novella.Sitting Pretty is about an Asian woman named Pretty who, as the theme of this book goes, loses family members. She loses her father before they could get better acquainted. He is the one who named her. She goes through life with this name, Pretty. As a young girl she thought it was cute and she had fun with it, then the middle school years started. She didn't think she was so pretty and the adolescent jokes started. She eventually grew into her looks, and as an adult, you don't receive to many jokes to your face. After her father passes, her moms 2 sisters move into their Manhattan home to help raise Pretty. Over the years, life happens. Mom quits her job (hubby had a huge policy), the sisters start a business, Pretty goes to college, the sisters get engaged, then tragedy strikes.Pretty is distraught for YEARS, but a call from her moms favorite dress shop finally brings Pretty back into the world.Reptilian, the novella, is about a woman born with a scaly skin condition so rare, that no doctor cares to find a cure. At 25, Rhoda has lived in Florida wearing tops that cover her back and arms, where these reptilian scales are located. She has never had a relationship last for fear of what the guy would say/do after they saw her. College was easy, keep a sweatshirt on. She met a guy, Chaz, who she was "feeling" but he was not feeling her back one he saw it and literally bolted. At work, she decided to date Bob. She didn't wait to long before showing him her back. He stayed...for a while. All I will say is that Rhoda did finally get her happy ending. But no one died.

In "Sitting Pretty," Carol White's elegant prose "sits pretty" atop layer cakes of emotion and meaning, making each story a sweet treat. A dessert buffet served before dinner (i.e., the novella), this book had me laughing, crying, dreaming, and hurrying to find out how the stories would end and then wishing they hadn't. Each story's resolution is artfully crafted and offers at least one satisfying surprise, often more. I recommend judging this book by its cover and reading it poolside or somewhere else fit for lounging around to add pleasure to any given day.

I'm a big fan of short stories and these hit all the sweet spots for me. Like the voice, they were comfort reads with an edge. Some of those stories had edges sharper than others:) I enjoy that in fiction for and about women.
