"'Please can you rescue me?' Young said, 'It's lonely here and I miss the others.'"I loved the Elmer books when I was a toddler. There's just something really fun about how different Elmer is, not just because he has all the colours of the rainbow on his patchwork skin, but because he has this quirky personality and does what he feels like even when everyone else has decided to do something else. I have recently finished reading The Trumpet of the Swan which rings with its own messages about individuality, but aimed at significantly older children, so it was fun to revisit Elmer and remember now unique he feels even in a jungle full of rare animals. In this instalment, Elmer's jungle is flooded and he decides to take a walk even when the rains are of biblical proportions. Everyone is bored and restless, but only Elmer takes the plunge. I like that about him a lot. He finds Young, an adolescent elephant, stranded on an island separated from his family and sets up one of those ingenious, almost Wallace and Grommit engineered solutions to trade places with Young on the island. "They tied the ends of the rope to either end of a big log. Elmer stood on the log, then the animals pulled on the rope and Elmer was ferried across to the island." For me, this is what picture books are all about, showing what words on a page would make obscenely complicated when images can convey something that a toddler can just about grasp. A very professional picture book featuring a favourite childhood character just as loveable after all these years."'Good,' said Elmer, 'I'll be happy here until the flood waters go down. Finally I can have a bit of peace and quiet.'"

The review originally published on The Children's Book and Media ReviewIt has been raining for days and Elmer, the patchwork elephant, is tired of being stuck inside a cave with the rest of his herd. Many animals suggest to him that he should come inside their caves because of the rain, but Elmer still wants to go for a walk. The jungle is partly flooded, but the crocodiles are excited to swim in new places and the ducks are enjoying the weather. Elmer learns that Young Elephant is missing, so he goes to rescue Young, who is stuck on an island. Elmer gets all of the other elephants to help rescue Young. When the elephants trap him on the island as a joke, Elmer is just happy to finally have some peace and quiet.Although stories about Elmer the patchwork elephant have been around for decades and delighted readers of all ages, this one falls a bit flat. Elmer is kind to other animals during the story, but the joke played on him by the other elephants after he uses his time and ingenuity to help Young Elephant is mean and sad. Readers can learn to take things well when people do things that could hurt our feelings, but the issue of bullying is ignored because Elmer handles it so well. Long-time Elmer fans will probably still enjoy the book, but overall it is forgettable and doesn’t handle the issue of bullying well.

Elmer and I agree, sometimes it's better to weather the rain in life, than it is to be stuck inside with the wrong sort of people. A great read for a child who enjoys having alone time!

It has been raining for a very long time and everyone was hiding out in a cave. Elmer grew tired of the bad jokes and weather complaints, so he decided to go outside for a little peace and quiet. Elmer walked in the rain even though the animals in other caves begged him to come inside. Elmer noticed that much of the land near the riverbanks had flooded. He spoke to the crocodiles and ducks who loved the rain and the extra water on the ground for swimming. Then Elmer met two elephants who were worried about their missing child. Elmer went looking for him and found him stranded on a small island in the water. Elmer went back to his cave and asked all the animals to help him rescue the young elephant. The monkey brought a vine which they used as a rope to ferry Elmer across the flood water. Elmer put the young elephant on the ferry and sent him back to his parents. The animals played a trick on Elmer and untied the rope so that Elmer was now stranded. Elmer laughed and said he was happy they did, now he could get some peace and quiet. http://julianaleewriter.com/books-ali...

It's raining heavily outside and all the elephants have been cooped up inside the cave for a long time. Elmer wants some peace and quiet, so he goes for a quiet walk in the rain. As he travels, he sees that many parts of the jungle have flooded. He then learns that one of the little elephants has become trapped on an island and goes to seek help. I enjoyed the colorful illustrations and felt that they would be very appealing to a preschool audience; however, I was taken aback by the abrupt ending. The story's tone up to that point had been gentle and observational, matching the idea of an elephant taking a nice stroll through the jungle, but the ending seemed too sudden and off-balance.

Elmer knows just what he needs when he needs it. When a young elephant is trapped on a newly formed island from the flood, Elmer enlists the others to help him rescue Young. Then the others play a trick on Elmer and the question becomes, who tricks who?Written and illustrated by David McKee. Published by Andersen Press USA.#jungle #elephants #flooding #PB

Bright colors and art enhance his straightforward story about Elmer, who goes walking in the rain. He ends up discovering a small elephant in need of saving &, with ingenuity & the cooperation of others, pulls it off. The mean trick pulled at the end on Elmer is rather sad, though Elmer makes it work for him. Overall, this is an adequate, if forgettable story. Recommended to Elmer fans.

Oh no! Lots of rain in the jungle means a flood - and a trapped Young Elephant. No worries - Elmer has it all figured out. He can rescue Young and also obtain some much needed peace and quiet for himself. Smart Elmer! He has it all figured out.

Really enjoyed the book up until the part where the other elephants bullied Elmer by untying the rope and stranding him on the island. Of course, Elmer's like "that's okay. I'll hang on the island and get my peace and quiet." Lame.
