Secret Valentine (The Festive Year) by Catherine Stock tells the tale of a little girl who makes valentines for her family and then adds a special name to her list, receiving a secret Valentine in return. Stock's colorful illustrations are rendered in watercolors, highlighted by colored pencils, which match this gentle story. I really enjoyed the pictures of Muffety, the cat. My favorite images are cover, in mom's lap, gluing hearts, drawing pictures, rainbow, letters, and prettiest.Narrated in simple language by the young girl, the idea of inclusion and making one's own cards or gifts are posituve messages, adding a helping of confidence. The text, in a large font, would be appropriate for a beginning reader. I am also glad to see the process of mailing cards in a picturebook.I enjoyed this just as I have others in The Festive Year series. For ages 2.5 to 5, valentines, crafts, Valentine's Day, creativity, inclusion, read-aloud, friendship, and fans of Catherine Stock.
This is a good one for storytime. Simple sweet story.
I think this book may have been the "turning point" for my little boy. He has avoided and shown nervousness with books in which the illustrations depict characters predominantly with darker skin tones. In this book my son could see the similarity in his own little sister and the cute little girl depicted in this book (regardless of the skin color difference), as well as relate with the character's enjoyment of crafts. I'm a happy mom. Thank you, Catherine Stock.
Unfortunately, this has the wrong book pictured with the title. I had great success with this with my Valentine story time over the years. 2/8/12Thanks, to Katie for fixing the book picture. Used again this year and it worked with my younger crowd. (2's and 3's) 2/13/13Used for a preschool class visit Valentine story time.
Used in Valentine storytime 2/11/2016 - this worked better than The Valentine Bears for the group I had today, especially as a transition to our craft making collaged cards.
Mama read this to me leading up to Valentine's Day.
