Green Start: The Five Senses Reviews
Green Start: The Five Senses is a beautifully executed board book, aimed at children ages 3-6. The book is made out of recycled materials and printed with soy-based inks, giving it a very modern, "green" feel. In rhyming verse each page illustrates ways a child (or an adult) can experience the nature around them using their fives senses. The illustrations are simple and sweet. The various characters on each page reflects diverse ethnicities, so any child reading this book can see themselves on the pages. The final two pages, titled "Keep Nature Natural" gives the reader basic "green" living instructions. While the title would suggest that the book is all about the fives senses, the focus of the book as a whole is on "green consumerism".I would recommend including this book as part of a "Green Living" or "Earth Day" book collection or library event. The book piques the readers interest in the environment around them, and then gives them instructions for how to care for their environment. This book would be enjoyable for a child between 3-6 because of the cute illustrations and lyrical rhythm. I've found from my own experience with toddlers and preschoolers, that they tend to want to hear rhyming books read to them over and over again. This is the kind of book that is meant to be read to a child repeatedly.
We read this before nap, and he seems to like it. It's cute. Not really a story, but babies don't mind that. Spoiler: At the end a kid goes to bed, listening to the crickets. I always hope my son finds that part inspiring.
Good illustrations. Good storyline about the senses.
Discover all the beauty nature has to offer with this lovely rhyming board book. That I edited. :-)
