Free, in Public Domain. Part of a collection of adventure stories by Jules Verne, the story includes Captain Nemo from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Set in about 1864, this ought to be called Ode to the Engineer. Wish I could read the original, in French, because in the translation, Captain Nemo was "tidied" up to better support American Imperialism. Not sure who translated the edition I am reading.Alternately reading and listening to audio. Good narration by Berny Clark.I tagged it "animals" because the book is stuffed with scientific descriptions of the island animals, and because fairly important roles are played by the dog Topper and the orangutang Jupiter. The story started off well, but the pacing got severely bogged down in long technical descriptions of the island's location, it's geography, flora, fauna, minerals, etc. I needed more story. Wanted more suspense and action about the mystery of the sea creature that attacked the dog, Topper, the mysterious rescue of the drowning engineer, the strange sounds beneath the cavern, the treasure chest, the bullet in the animal, etc. The five stranded characters are almost perfect human beings, especially the engineer, Silas Harding. He can apparently do anything, build anything, solve any problem. Long (read boring) technical descriptions of how he builds nitroglycerin, a kiln, clay pottery, bricks, a house, a farm, a road, a cart...Amazing how well these castaways get along, day and night, for so long. No island fever here. No squabbles even. Just a longing for some tobacco.Stereotyping of the freed slave, Neb. He cooks the meals and seriously adores Silas Harding. His devotion to his non-master is similar to that of a dog's. Also, he befriends Jupitor. The old sailor, Pencroft, got little credit for what he would know about survival, navigation, and weather patterns. In almost every case, the engineer is eulogized for his knowledge and the sailor relegated to grunt worker, hunter, gatherer, farmer. However, he does build a little boat. His foster son (of sorts) is the estimable Herbert, who apparently is a walking encyclopedia about flora and fauna, the natural sciences. The newspaper editor has very little texture.Didn't like the scene with the orangutangs. Seemed like excessive animal killing. Didn't like what became of Jupiter.Survival was too easy.Stopped reading / listening at half-way point. May pick it up again. Doubtful.See my reading status updates for more.

defiantly the manual i would like to have with me if i was ever trapped on a deserted island. clearly a superior work to robinson crusoe (despite its inherent literary value as the 'first' novel).

This is the only Jules Vernes book that I really enjoyed reading as a teenager.

I have a bad memory. So, obviously, this title must have a special place in my heart for me to be able to remeber it so vividly after 20 years. My first big adventure book!
